Entering my blog

Hi. I am Ramakoti. I have just created my blog. Here I wish to share my views on my passion carnatic music.Even though i am an ardent fan of carnatic music and bajans, I simply love all music types. That is why I named my blog as MMM.

I am a chennaite. The december music season is on. Today 18th Dec. I heard Shri. Vijay Siva in margali maha utsavam under the caption GURU KRIPA.

He said that we pay pranams to our guru on Guru poornima day and to Acharyal on Vijaya Dasami day.

Is not guru and acharyal the same? I dont understand. Please clarify if any one could.

He sung guruvinagulama of Purandaradasa in Panthuvarali. I have heard the same in Hamsanandi.Which is correct according to the text and bava of the song. Please comment.

  1. I completely go with Mr.Vijay siva. There might be confusion in the name ( guru or acharyan) but both are different personalities. One is who remove this wordly ignorance and imparts lowkika gnana and other who gives paramatmika gnana ( the real gnanam) . In some cases both the personalities are found in the same person where the disciple becomes blessed,

  2. Hi Ramakoti,
Congratulations on starting your own blog site.
    Guru and AchArya:
My understanding of the words are:
Guru: one who has taught you some.
AchArya: one who is a guru for many who have been directly taught and also one who is considered as a great person, follwed by multitudes of people for his/her philosophy/teachings. For exmple: ShankarAchArya, RAmAnjAchArya, MadhvAchArya, SwAmi VivEkAnandha, RAmakrishNa Paramahamsa etc

Guruvina gulAma nAguva thanaka- kruthi of PuranDhara dhAsa has been sung in rAgas like kAmavardhini, hamsAnandhi, nAdhanAmkriya, kIravANi, kApi, DhanyAsi. This is because we do not know in what rAga, the Composer PuranDhara dhAsa set it to. So, different artists have tuned the sAhithya to the rAga they liked.
    Manjunath.

  3. Hello Mr.Ramakoti
    Nice to see the blog.
From the very little knowledge which I have I thought I could answer the questions of yours. I am not sure if i am right, any corrections are absolutely welcome.
Guru is a realized soul. He is not Master. He is a realized soul who knows when to do what and who guides his students in the right way.
Acharya is a teacher who spreads spirituality wherever he goes. I guess that means, Acharya is someone who is a little above the Guru status.
Coming to the krithi, Guruvinagulama. The song has a great bhavam. The hamsanandhi version is very popular. Vijay Siva sang the song in Panthuvarali. This version sounded good too. Generally there is always a controversy about the ragas of Purandaradasar's compositions. Like, "Raama Raama enniro" is sung in Vasantha while a few others sing in Tilang. "Ninna nodi dhanya" is sung in Thodi as well as in Misrabehag. "Narajanma bandaaga" is sung in Basant bahar as well as in MAdhuvanthi. Its like a composition having a classical way of singing and a lighter way.Personally I believe both the ragas Panthuvarali and Hamsanandhi would be relevant to the songs's text. I could be wrong, pls correct me if i am.
    Keep blogging :)

  6. Dear Sri Ramakotiji
In my humble opinion( I may be absolutely wrong also) Guru is a person who has vast knowledge(of any subject) and hence is a person whose sheer weight of knowledge makes him guru(as in gurtvakarshana shakti of the mother earth)and he attarcts people who want to learn from him(in that perticular field)
Acharya is a person who is also a ocean of knowledge and is more intersted in using this knowledge to realise and make others realise the ultimate truth or parmartha of being born on this earth.
Thus the acharya can be a guru and vice-versa eg being Vaasihta who was a kula guru for Srirama.
Regarding pruandara dasa kritis I think all his compositions are based on rasa and bhava and are mostly composed with total bhakti in the true dasa parmpara and hence the composer probably has deliberately left it to the singer's manodharma to choose which ever raga he wants to bring out the essence of Bhakti in the compositon.

  7. Today one person by name Chellappa remarked my above query for Acharya/Guru, as half baked. in the Sangeethapriya group.
In fact I made my query with all humility only. I don't know why should mr.chellappa termed it as half baked.I request him here to exercise utmost caution in using any word in a public forum like sangeethapriya, that would hurt others.
As far as spirituality is concerned, all we human beings are half baked only.Only mahatmas and saints know 100% in this sphere and they only can be considered as fully baked,if I am permitted to use chellappa's term.OK. Let me leave it at that and turn to useful discussion.
yesterday, you all would have heard Smt nithya sree and today Sri. T M Krishna. I will tell my opinion. Your remarks are welcome.

Nithyasree: I have been hearing her since 1992. She sang Kanchadalayadakshi in vilamba kaalam, which I felt as extremely slow. I am used to MSS's rendition of this krithi since 1973 in the madhyama kaalam and hence I could not relish this slow pace( DKP's paadantharam).
Further she sang this krithi splitting words in such a way like instead of telling sukku, milagu, thippili, she sang like sukkumi, laguthi, ippili that sounded awkward to me.
Music is for listening pleasure.Clinging to once school of music, like DKP's, is commendable,if it could promote better enjoyment.I am sorry that it didn't happen.

The other song,Eppadi paadinaro was not in keeping with the DKP's style. DKP sang as Eppadi paadiNARO and not as sung by Nithyasree as Eppadi padiNAARO. The additional aakaram removed the sowkya bavam of the song. Many of her songs in this concert appeared to me like recitation and not song rendition due to the slow pace and unnecessary intonation of lyrics at various places.
T M Krishna; Better keep quiet than to say any thing. God save the rasikas,i can only plead.OK?

  8. If you watch Cho's "Engey Brahmanam" in the past couple of weeks, you would know. Guru is a teacher who teaches. But, Acharya is a GURU who also lives by (teach, preach, practice & live) what he/she teaches. It is one thing to teach but a whole lot different to live by what you teach.

    Hope this helps,
